Sport and entertainment

Throughout history people have found ways to entertain and enjoy themselves. The rich had more time and money to spend on expensive pastimes, but the poor would also take what enjoyment they could on holidays such as Christmas, at harvest festivals or at wakes and fairs.

During the Victorian period, there began to be more choice of entertainment. Travelling shows and circuses offered spectacles which were affordable to a wider range of people and improvements in transport, such as railways, enabled people to travel more cheaply and to see sights they could not have seen before.
