Health and medicine

Keeping healthy has always been important. This was especially the case in the past when, if you were not well enough to work, your family might starve or become homeless.

Home remedies were commonly used and many housewives would have prepared syrups and lotions for their families and neighbours, which would have been tried and tested and passed down through the generations. These treatments often included bizarre and unusual ingredients to modern eyes. In rare instances, women who prepared herbal remedies may have been accused of witchcraft.

Medical treatments by professional doctors were not always effective and their time and prescriptions had to be paid for. Child mortality was high and effective treatments for epidemics such as cholera were unknown.
