Children’s lives

Children’s lives have changed substantially through different periods of history. Child mortality rates were high and the children from poor families were expected to work and contribute to their household income. The contrast between the lives of rich and poor could be dramatic.

The introduction of compulsory schooling and legislation which restricted the working hours of children enabled more children to enjoy a childhood. Below is a selection of documents which illustrate different aspects of children’s lives.
