The Peformance

The story acted by Amelia Pitt, was set in the year 1833, when Rebecca was 16 years old. Rebecca introduces herself and tells about her home and family, and of her work as a carrier on 'the bonk'.

She describes how she has to carry heavy iron boxes on her head and how it makes her neck hurt. One day she hopes to become a 'picker' since this job pays better wages, she might also get the chance to go to London and work in the market gardens.

A performance of the Rebecca story

During the play, Rebecca teaches the children her favourite song and a dance. Rebecca is looking forward to the Oakengates Wakes; she encourages the children to act out scenes from the wakes, such as juggling, hot dumpling eating, gambling with dice, the sweet stall and the merry go round. She then recreates the excitement of the bull baiting with the children.

The children's preparations for the baiting are interrupted by Lucy Cameron, the vicar's wife, who is shocked that children are taking part in such a cruel 'sport'. She tells them to read the petition she has prepared to send to the Houses of Parliament, where a bill to put an end to such barbarism is to be considered. The children are asked to decide if they would ban bull baiting.
