Charles I at Shrewsbury

Charles I at Shrewsbury

This engraving is a later representation of an event which took place at Shrewsbury in 1642.  It shows Charles I addressing his Royalist supporters at the Gaye Meadow, at the onset of what became the Civil War.

Shropshire was predominately a Royalist county, but there were also pockets of support for Parliament. Many people had divided loyalties; they supported the King but resented his imposition of taxes or wanted more religious freedom.
