Plate V from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Vol I.

The Chronicle records the history Britain and especially the Anglo-Saxons. It was probably written during the reign of King Alfred in the ninth century and these contemporary accounts of events are the most detailed. Several copies were made (all written by hand) and distributed to monasteries where they were further copied and added to. Nine copies survive but they are all slightly different.

This image is from a Victorian copy and is written in Old English.
